1. Mawlynnong – The Cleanest Village In India
‘Discover India’ magazine awarded the prestigious title of ‘Cleanest Village in Asia’ in 2003 to Mawlynnong, a small village located in a remote region of Meghalaya. The village is 90 km from the state capital of Shillong and can be considered as an inspirational village for those who litter around without sparing a thought.
The village is so clean that you will not find a single plastic bag or any other waste out in the open. The village is located in East Khasi Hills district and is located along the Indo- Bangladesh border. Agriculture is practised by most of the villagers in Mawlynnong, with betel nut being their most preferred source of income.
To maintain its cleanest village in Asia tag, the villagers have made earnest efforts. All the village waste gets collected in dustbins that have been made from bamboo. This waste is then directed towards a specially prepared pit, so as to be used as manure.
